In Quaker parlance, Yarmouth is what is called a “silent meeting.” That is, we do not have a pastor or preacher, and worshippers enter the Meeting House and sit in silence until moved by God to speak and deliver a message.
Our Meetings for Worship last an hour and some meetings pass in total silence when noone is so moved. Other meetings are punctuated by many messages, called “verbal ministry.” (Theologically, these messages are the basis for the continuous revelation that is a core belief of the Religious Society of Friends.)
You may find that arriving 5-10 minutes early allows you to settle in comfortably before silent worship begins at 10 a.m. Quakers call this process of settling in “centering,” a prelude to collecting your thoughts and opening yourself up to God’s messages. We invite you to join us.
